Tamara and I have been meaning to catalog all our crap for insurance purposes for some time now. What's the point of having insurance if you can't prove you had something before your house burned down right? Insurance companies want to know!

My approch might be overkill, but we have a lot of cash tied up in books, cd's, and dvd's, so it makes sense to keep track of those. I have a WelchAllyn barcode scanner (WelchAllyn has been bought by Symbol; hopefully they got the WA industrial design people, Symbol scanners are ugly) so I want to be able to just scan the ISBN or UPC and have some software go out to Amazon's database and pull the relevent information. That would be cool.

In pursuit of this, I signed up for Amazon's web services and got myself a developer token. Since I like Python, I decided to see what I could find to access either the REST or SOAP interfaces using Python. I found this instead; a complete Python library specifically designed to access Amazon's web services. NIFTY!

Now I just have to cook up a db schema (actually, Gnumeric spreadsheets will do for now), and write a Python script to dump data into it with every scan.

So are you going to be "fixing" serendipity with all your free time or are you going to create this nifty sounding app that I almost think is worth bridging to a Cocoa UI.

This looks similar to what you want but only for books - booxter - http://www.deepprose.com/

It would be great if it worked for dvd's and other goodies.

Oh, and one more serendipity complaint (I'll complain here so you can make the patches, not me) is how when I click submit it doesn't immediately take me to a page saying that the comment is being submitted (*before*) it confirms that it has been successfully submitted...
