Dude, while you're making all the special little extras, don't forget: You don't want to look like a dumbass with no results in Hawaii.
This is a necessary enhacement!
Right now, I'm more worried about looking like a dumbass on Tuesday when Maria comes.... Do you know about Lumerical? (www.lumerical.ca) They developed fdtd code with specific focus on optics. And their software is available on Westgrid (http://www.lumerical.com/partners). I had a chat with them yesterday. I kind of went for an interview, although they're not actually hiring, but they may be hiring in a year or so, so they were willing to chat with me.
Yes, Reuven talk has done some work with them. He wanted me to work with them in fact, but I didn't want to because I want to release Phred open source and didn't want to be accused of stealing code or idea cross pollination or anything. I'm paranoid that way.
They have a much nicer GUI than mine (I don't have one, and have no intentions of building one). I make it sound like I'm not having any fun and that it's all very hard, but I'm actually having quite a lot of fun. I'd rather fight my own bugs than try to find out why commercial software does not work. At least this way I have the source code!
I wasn't thinking that you should use theirs rather than your own. I was just wondering if you use theirs to compare to your own results? And what you thought of it. I fully understand that you dont want to use their code at this stage... you're trying to learn and understand how all of this stuff works, which you don't when you use other people's software!
Ah, actually, that's a good idea. There are some new students of Reuvens that have moved into the lab and have taken over Kris's spot... they have the front end installed down there.
